Upon explaining the material stresses resulting from the action effects axial force N, shear force V and bending moment M. The peculiarities of stresses in welds and welded joints are considered.

The stresses in welds can be categorised as to the kind and direction of the actions and the type of weld.

Axial stresses parallel to the longitudinal direction of the weld
The weld stress sII acting in longitudinal direction of the weld has not to be considered for statically or predominately statically loaded structures.

parallel stresses

Axial stresses perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the weld
The weld stress s^ occurs in butt welds in case of forces acting perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the weld and has to be verified through calculation.

Axial stresses perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the weld

Shear stresses parallel to the longitudinal direction of the weld
The weld stress tII occurs in side welds and is caused by combined shear and bending loads and has to be verified through calculation.
Shear stresses parallel to the longitudinal direction of the weld

Shear stresses perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the weld
The weld stress t^ occurs in fillet welds through actions perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the weld and has to be verified through calculation. In fillet welds the stress t^ has the same amount as the stress s^.
